Your Daily Dose of Free

It’s always great when a band I love gives away music for free – that’s the musical spirit and it makes me more apt to purchase from them in the future.

This time, The Rocket Summer is giving away a live acoustic album .

Jedi Hockey Players

What happens when a hockey player who is secretly a Jedi Knight becomes really frustrated at a goal? He pulls out his lightsabre and chops off his goalie’s head.

Hockey Player Lightsabre

I wish I could say this was 100% photoshopped, but he actually hit his goalie in the head with his stick in a real game. It was by accident, but definitely the worst way to respond to being scored on.

Summer Movies: Horrible Bosses

What do Jason Bateman (Arrested Development) and Charlie Day (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) have in common? Warner Bros. Summer comedy called Horrible Bosses.

It’s an odd combination of comedic talent. Not only is the budding SNL actor Jason Sudekis in it, but so is Jennifer Aniston, Colin Farrell, Jamie Foxx, and Kevin Spacey. The trailer looks funny, but typically when you have a lot of big name actors, there can be competing comedic egos. I really hope it works out though as Jason and Charlie are two of my favorite actors.

Paperbacks

Found some perfect new summertime shorts that can be rocked with just about anything.  These Original Paperbacks are a casual yet sleek micro-corduroy (i just made that up) that come in multiple colors.

I’m not a huge fan of sandals but nowadays you can wear shorts with almost any shoe.  The small fray hem at the bottom really compliments the stylishness of the cords.  You can find these shorts at most Nordstrom’s.  And that’s as many fashion hot-words I’ll include in a post…promise.

Not your Ordinary Documentary

Some documentaries are made to tell stories that hollywood deems not glamorous enough to deserve an insanely big budget. Others are made to try and bring attention to a topic that isn’t widely known by the public, such as the Cove. However, every once in a while, there comes a trailer about something so obscure that you don’t know what to think of. Something like Make Believe, a documentary about aspiring magicians who have dedicated their young lives to becoming future David Copperfield’s. It’s intriguing, take a look:

I can’t decide if this is worthy of seeing yet, let me know what you think in the comments.

The Only Mall You Need

Everyone knows of the increasingly-popular daily coupon websites – all I need to say is groupon.com and you know exactly what I am talking about. However, what is slightly falling by the wayside is the daily fashion deal, pioneered, in part, by Gilt Groupe. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, check out some of the website below for some mind-blowing savings on designer-goods:

Free Album of the Week 2.0

Milkdud already posted his Free Album of the Week so i’ll try not to steal any of his thunder with this one but for all my hip hop faithful feast on this.

Big K.R.I.T. (King Remembered In Time) has blessed the hip hop community with a free album featuring artists such as Raheem Devaughn, Ludacris, Bun B, and Chamillionaire.  He’s been featured in Rolling Stone and is hailed as one of rap’s up and comers. Fans that enjoy old school hip hop such as UGK and Outkast definitely need to peep this free album.  Don’t be scared. Give it a try and thank me later.

Zombie Apocalypse Party

On a paranoia scale from 1 to 10, I’m about -100 on worrying about zombies taking over the earth one day. With that having been said, if the owner of this house were to ever throw a party if zombies did take over, his house is where I’d want to be.

So let’s say you’re at this dude’s house, everyone is having a good time and no blood-thirsty zombies are there, then you would be just hanging out in a cool, semi-ordinary contemporary home like this:

Now let’s imagine the zombies start coming, then the owner presses a button and the house starts to protect itself like this:

In a matter of minutes you would be totally secure from anything. It’s pretty rad, no?

Pool Party Playlist ’11

I’m not sure where you’re reading this, but hopefully it’s starting to warm up and you’re getting glimpses of Summer and all its glory. If you are looking ahead to days at the pool or floating on a tube in a lake, here’s a great jam to add to your playlist as you lazily drink yourself into an oblivion. Enjoy:

Free Album of the Week

Artist: Jordan Renshaw

Album: The Astronaut and the Comet

Genre: Acoustic, Pop, Piano Rock, Indie, Adult Contemporary

Similar Artists: Something Corporate, The Morning Of, Dashboard Confessional

Bottom Line
This is a name-your-price (a.k.a free, but I encourage you to support the artist if you like their stuff enough) album that has, so far, well exceeded my expectations for a free full-length album from an artist I’ve never heard of.  If you have every been a fan of piano rock, Andrew McMahon, or just about any other popular adult contemporary musician (Chris Carrabba, Dave Matthews, John Mayor, Matt Wertz, Matt Nathanson, Jason Mraz, etc.) there is something in this album for you.  Check it out, after all, it’s free, so you’ve got nothing to lose – and don’t forget, this is the new business model for music (listen first, purchase later), so if you like it, toss the kid a couple bucks.

Cheers ~ Milkhorn

Note: Bandcamp is a great service, but sometimes prices change, albums are removed, links change, and so forth.  I apologize if the link provided no longer links to the album or if the album is no longer free/name-your-own-price.
